Interferon-beta (IFNβ) is a cytokine produced in large quantities by fibroblasts in response to pathogens. IFNβ controls both immune responses to viral infections and nonspecific humoral immune responses. In a healthy environment, IFNβ is only present in small amounts. However, with viral infection, inflammation, and autoimmunity, levels can rise significantly. The biological effects of IFNβ include antiviral and antiproliferative properties. IFNβ has been utilized as a therapeutic agent in the treatment of multiple sclerosis and chronic active hepatitis B, with some success. If the disease has not been present for more than five years, it appears to have the best chance of success.
AlphaLISA technology allows the detection of molecules of interest in a no-wash, highly sensitive, quantitative assay. In an AlphaLISA assay, a biotinylated anti-analyte antibody binds to the Streptavidin-coated Donor beads while another anti-analyte antibody is conjugated to AlphaLISA Acceptor beads. In the presence of the analyte, the beads come into close proximity. The excitation of the Donor beads causes the release of singlet oxygen molecules that triggers a cascade of energy transfer in the Acceptor beads, resulting in a sharp peak of light emission at 615 nm.
